Meet Dan Doofus! NFPA's New Electrical Safety PSA
The National Fire Protection Association is encouraging you to get grounded in the basics of electrical safety.

According to the NFPA, electrical distribution and lighting equipment were involved in an estimated 20,900 reported home structure fires in 2005. These fires resulted in 500 civilian deaths and 1,100 civilian injuries, with $862 million in direct property damage.

To learn more about what you can do to keep your home safe from electrical fires, come www.nfpa.org.

Critical Operations Power Systems
Instructor Michael Johnston addresses critical operations power systems (COPS) — those systems that are vital for such purposes as safety and national security — as addressed by this new Article. Facilities reliant on COPs include hospitals, 911 operation centers, and others that are crucial, particularly during catastrophic events.

Electrified Truck Parking Spaces
Instructor Michael Johnston introduces this new article for the 2008 edition of the Code. Article 626 addresses developing the infrastructure necessary to reduce the need for truck idling. A reduction in truck idling can produce a range of benefits, from lower oil consumption to fewer harmful emissions.

Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Dwelling Units
Instructor Michael Johnston introduces this new rule requiring that tamper-resistant receptacles be installed in all areas where receptacles are specified in 210.52.

Conductors in Raceways on Rooftops
Among other changes to the Code, instructor Michael Johnston addresses this significant change in which additional correction factors are required to be added to conductors and cables installed in raceways on rooftops. The amount of correction factor is directly related to the distance above the roof in which the conduit is installed.

Equipment Grounding Conductor Installed with Feeders to Separate Structures
As a result of changes made to Chapter 2, a new centrally located campus-style power arrangement with feeders to separate buildings or structures must have equipment grounding conductors installed with those feeders.  Instructor Michael Johnston addresses this new requirement and the exception that applies at existing installations.

AFCI Protection in Dwelling Units
Michael Johnston, a licensed Master Electrician, addresses the changes to AFCI protection requirements in the 2008 Code. To address the fact that arcing faults create fires in dwelling unit electrical systems, AFCI protection requirements have been expanded to encompass more areas.

GFCI Protection for Personnel Exceptions Deleted
Instructor Michael Johnston explains how, with the deletion of exceptions to 210.8(A)(2) and 210.8(A)(5), the GFCI requirements for receptacles in accessory buildings, garages, and basements have been strengthened.
