The 2008 NEC ® defines ground simply as “the earth” and a grounding electrode is “a conducting object through which a direct connection to ground is made.”  Therefore, a grounded electrical system at the building shown in this picture can be connected to ground through the use of one or more of the grounding electrodes covered in 250.52(A)(1) through 250.52(A)(8).
